Hi
I did that once - we were moving furniture around, and had a day when the kids’ bedrooms were empty, so I decided to give them a good clean.
It was proper work, but seemed pretty effective! You need to follow the instructions (well, obviously, but not everyone does). You fill up one bit with clean water, clean the floor, and the dirty water goes into another bit. This is great, because you can tell how well you are going! Keep a nice glass jar of the dirty water to scare visitors with too, that’s fun.
They offer you cleaning products with the machine, which you will need to make it work - a detergent, a defoamer, and I think a spray for spots. But here’s my tip - get some “Orange Power” carpet and upholstery cleaner, and use that instead of the spot cleaner. Spray it on and leave for a few minutes, then go over it with the cleaner. Does a great job. You can buy it at the supermarket.
The cleaner does leave the floor fairly damp, so think about how you are going to cope the rest of the day. I banned kids from the carpeted areas for the day. Fine the next day though. You should go out to dinner after all your cleaning, then just tiptoe to bed!
They don’t really use “steam”, just a fine spray of warm water, then suction to suck it back with the dirt. Hence the damp result - sort of like a towel that’s just come out of a good spin in the washing machine.
Hope that helps. I may even do mine again!
I have used them quite successfully on several occassions. If you are renting you might want to check your lease agreement or call your agent because some will only allow professional floor cleaning.
My dad swears by them. But I’ve used Dryton personally and I’m prepared to pay extra money to get a quality job. If your carpet is cream, I would go with Drytron. They’re brilliant!! Coolness!!
